Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring a page so an AI tool, ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, can pull a direct answer from it and cite the source. It overlaps with SEO but isn't the same problem: SEO gets a page ranked in a list of links, AEO gets a specific sentence or two lifted out of the page and attributed to it.
The Core Difference From Traditional SEO
A traditional search result competes for a click. An AI citation competes to be the answer, or one of a handful of sources an AI tool synthesizes into its own answer. That means the goal shifts from "convince someone to click through" to "state the actual answer clearly enough, early enough, that a machine can extract it correctly without misreading the page."
Open With a Direct-Answer Block
The single highest-leverage AEO change on most existing content: a tight, 40-80 word paragraph immediately after the headline that directly answers the implied question, before any setup, story, or context. AI crawlers and summarizers weight the opening of a page heavily, and a page that opens with three paragraphs of preamble before getting to the actual answer is asking to be skipped in favor of a competitor that answers immediately.
Structure for Extraction, Not Just Readability
Short paragraphs, real lists instead of dense prose, and clear headers that state what the following section actually answers all make a page easier for an AI system to parse and extract cleanly. A 200-word unbroken paragraph might read fine for a human skimming slowly, but it's much harder for a summarization system to confidently pull one clean sentence out of.
Write the direct answer first, then the supporting detail. Not because it reads worse the other way for a human, but because an AI system rarely reads past the setup to find where the actual answer starts.
Schema Still Matters, Differently
Article schema with a real author, publish date, and update date remains a meaningful trust signal. FAQ schema is worth using where a page genuinely answers discrete questions, not stapled onto a page that doesn't actually have FAQ-shaped content, since AI systems (like search engines) can detect when schema doesn't match the visible page.

Trust Signals Matter More, Not Less
An AI system deciding whether to cite a source is running its own version of the trust check a human runs: does this look like a real author, a real business, current information. A visible author bio, consistent entity naming across the site, and clear freshness markers (a real, accurate last-updated date, not a hardcoded copyright year) all feed into that trust check.
What Doesn't Change
Content still has to be genuinely useful, specific, and accurate to earn a citation, the same bar it's always had to clear to earn a ranking. AEO isn't a trick that gets thin content cited, it's a set of structural choices that help genuinely good content get found and extracted correctly by systems that read pages differently than a human does.
A Quick AEO Self-Check
- Does the page answer its own implied question within the first 80 words? If the answer is buried past several paragraphs of setup, an AI summarizer may extract the wrong sentence, or skip the page entirely.
- Are paragraphs short enough to extract cleanly? A single paragraph that runs 200+ words and covers three separate ideas is hard for a summarization system to pull one clean answer from.
- Does the byline name a real person with real credibility? Anonymous or generic "Team" bylines are a weaker trust signal for both AI systems and human readers.
- Is structured data accurate and current? Article schema with a stale or missing dateModified undercuts the freshness signal the content itself might otherwise send.
- Would the answer still make sense with zero surrounding context? That's close to how an AI system actually extracts and quotes it.
None of this replaces writing something genuinely worth citing. It just makes sure the structure isn't quietly working against content that already deserves to be found.
