Microsoft Clarity Is Free. Here's How to Find $10K/Month in Leaks

You don't need Hotjar's paid plan to run session replay and heatmaps. Clarity does 80% of the work for free. Here's the setup and what to look for first.

Why Clarity Exists

Microsoft built Clarity to compete with Hotjar. It's a session replay and heatmap tool. It's free forever. No seat limits. No bandwidth caps. No "upgrade when you hit 10K sessions per month."

Hotjar charges $89/month for basic recording. Clarity is $0. The tradeoff: Clarity's interface is less polished. The feature set is smaller. But for ecommerce CRO work, you don't need the extra polish.

What you do need: unlimited recordings, rage click detection, dead click detection, heatmaps, and GDPR compliance. Clarity has all four. That's 80% of the work.

What Clarity Does Well

Unlimited session recordings. Watch as many as you want. No throttling. No "upgrade your plan to export more data." A typical ecommerce store records 500-2000 sessions per day. Clarity takes all of them.

Auto-detection of friction patterns. Clarity flags rage clicks, dead clicks, and "quick backs" automatically. You don't have to spot them manually. The system surfaces them for you. That saves hours.

What Clarity Doesn't Do (vs Hotjar)

No built-in surveys. If you want to ask visitors questions while they're on the site, you need another tool. Hotjar's feedback widget is easier. Clarity doesn't have it.

Less polished reporting. Hotjar's UI is slicker. Clarity's is functional but dated. But once you know what you're looking for, the interface doesn't matter.

No heat maps for conversion funnels. Hotjar lets you build custom funnels and see how visitors move through them. Clarity doesn't. You still watch replays manually to understand flow.

These are nice-to-haves. For CRO audit work, they're not critical. You're looking for broken elements and friction points. Clarity surfaces those.

Installation (5 Minutes)

Go to clarity.microsoft.com. Sign up (free). They'll give you a project ID.

In your Shopify admin: go to Online Store > Themes > Edit code. Find the theme.liquid file. Paste this before the closing head tag:

Replace YOUR_PROJECT_ID with the one Clarity gave you. Save. Done.

The First Three Things to Check

1. Filter for "Add to Cart but No Checkout" visitors. These are your highest-intent drop-offs. Watch 10 replays. Look for where they stopped. Did they scroll past shipping cost and bail? Did they see a payment form and close the browser? Document what you see.

2. Compare mobile vs desktop on product pages. Pull a heatmap of the buy box area on mobile. Then on desktop. Where's the cursor positioned? How far down the fold is it? If the mobile buy box is below the fold on most devices, that's your first fix.

3. Pull the rage click and dead click reports. These auto-flag sessions with friction. Export the list. Watch the top 5-10. If multiple visitors rage-click the same element, that element is broken. Fix it now.
